The Story Behind IHPI
From Personal Struggle to Global Impact
Twenty years ago, it took all of my energy just to get out of bed each day.
Every joint in my body hurt. Every lymph node was swollen.
My entire immune system was shutting down, and I was suffering from what doctors and specialists referred to as an incurable illness. They gave me no hope of recovery.
I was told that, at best, I would need to take a fistful of medications for the rest of my life and do my best to manage my disease. That bleak diagnosis led me down a very dark path of anger, despair, and self-pity. I began to question whether this was even a life worth living.
I could no longer play sports, focus in school, or stay out late with friends. I felt like I had nothing left.
Until one day, by sheer chance, my mom heard about a local Integrative Health Practitioner just one town over from us. In the late 1990s, this was incredibly rare. Sitting in his office and hearing him explain that there was likely an underlying root cause to my illness was life-changing.
He spoke to me about food sensitivities, adrenal imbalances, and natural health concepts that were completely foreign to me and my family. He also explained how stress, sleep, diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors contributed to my condition.
I could hardly believe what I was hearing, but instinctively, I knew he was telling the truth.
That single encounter set me on a new path. One grounded in science, yet rooted in natural healing and the body’s innate ability to restore balance and vitality. Over the next several years, I read every book I could find on diet, health, and fitness while running countless lab tests on myself. I was slowly gathering the knowledge I needed to heal, but it still felt disconnected.
Then my mentor appeared.
“When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”
I was ready.
I listened to her every word as she bridged cutting-edge Functional Medicine with traditional healing systems such as Ayurveda. For the first time, everything connected. Not only did I fully heal my body, but I also felt called to study this knowledge at its deepest level, directly at the source.
I went on to study and intern at clinics and hospitals around the world, learning from diverse medical and healing traditions in India, Sri Lanka, China, Europe, and the United States. What I discovered was that each system had the power to help people heal, lose weight, and live longer, stronger lives. Yet on their own, each approach was incomplete.
True healing only happens when all forms of medicine are integrated without judgment, hierarchy, or ego.
Now, more than 300,000 client appointments later, and with one of the largest Functional Medicine practices in the world, I can say with absolute certainty that this approach works in the real world.
