IHP+ is a 3+ month, cohort-based certification program designed for practitioners pursuing national board certification eligibility through the NBHWC pathway while continuing to build upon the foundational wellness principles taught inside IHP.

Drawing on Dr. Cabral’s 20 years of clinical experience and more than 300,000 client appointments, the program goes deep into the coaching competencies, behavior change theories, communication skills, and professional standards required within board-certified health coaching, while equipping you with practical tools you’ll use every day in practice.

This is more than exam preparation. It’s an opportunity to expand your coaching skill set, pursue the NBCHWC credential pathway, and open doors within healthcare, corporate wellness, and professional coaching environments.

"For years, our community has been asking about board certification and I'm thrilled to say that with IHP+, we've built the program to make that possible. This is something I'm incredibly proud to offer, and I truly believe it will open many doors for our practitioners."

The IHP+ Curriculum

Every module in IHP+ is designed with the NBHWC board exam in mind. The first 11 modules build your coaching foundation, covering everything from behavior change psychology and motivational interviewing to client communication, accountability, and overcoming imposter syndrome. The advanced IHP+ modules then align directly with the NBHWC content domains, helping prepare you to sit for the board exam with confidence.

module 1+

Coaching Presence, Relationships, and Sessions

Effective health and wellness coaching is built on authentic presence, trust, and a client-centered partnership. The coach approaches each relationship with empathy, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard, recognizing the client as whole, resourceful, and the expert on their own life. Sessions are structured to clarify the client's vision, values, and goals, track progress, and ultimately celebrate growth while mapping a sustainable path forward - with the client's needs and preferences driving every interaction.

APPROX LEARNING ~7 HOURS

module 2+

Theories, Models, and Approaches to Behavior Change

Health and wellness coaching draws on a broad range of psychological, neuroscientific, and behavioral theories to support lasting behavior and mindset change. Coaches should have a working familiarity with key models - including Motivational Interviewing, Self-Determination Theory, the Transtheoretical Model, and Positive Psychology, among others - well enough to define them, recognize them in practice, and apply relevant strategies within their scope. While no theory is perfect, understanding these frameworks equips coaches to thoughtfully support each client's unique change process.

APPROX LEARNING ~2 HOURS

module 3+

Skills, Tools, and Strategies

Health and wellness coaches apply a diverse set of evidence-based skills and tools to empower clients toward sustainable lifestyle change. From active listening and motivational interviewing to goal-setting and behavior change techniques, coaches use these approaches to build awareness, strengthen self-efficacy, and support meaningful action. Adapted to each client's unique needs, values, and lived experience, these skills ensure a personalized, inclusive coaching process that promotes long-term health and wellbeing.

module 4+

Ethics and Professional Practice

Health and wellness coaches are committed to professional excellence through continuous development, ethical practice, and adherence to legal guidelines. This includes ongoing self-reflection, cultural humility, and staying current with evidence-based research, while operating strictly within the NBHWC Scope of Practice and referring clients to specialists when needed. Coaches uphold the NBHWC Code of Ethics by honoring client privacy, maintaining clear boundaries, and responsibly navigating emerging technologies - all while complying with relevant regulations including HIPAA.

APPROX LEARNING ~3 HOURS

module 5+

Health and Wellness

Health and wellness coaching embraces a whole-person approach, recognizing that wellbeing spans physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions. Coaches maintain working knowledge of proactive health practices, common chronic conditions, and evidence-based lifestyle recommendations — not to advise or diagnose, but to support each client's unique vision and goals. Equally important is an understanding of health equity, social and structural determinants of health, and health literacy, ensuring coaching is inclusive and responsive to the full context of each client's life.

"Before IHP, I didn't understand the coaching process much at all. Coaching was a mystery. I have a healthier outlook for my practice. Understanding how to coach others helped me work on some difficult things that I didn't realize were holding me back both as a coach and as a business owner."

Your IHP+ Questions, Answered

We understand that choosing the right continuing education path is a big decision. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often:

WHY IS IHPI THE PLACE TO TAKE MY NBHWC-APPROVED TRAINING PROGRAM?

There are over 130 NBHWC-approved programs to choose from. IHPI is the only one built on Dr. Stephen Cabral's root-cause methodology - a framework that has already trained thousands of practitioners worldwide and shaped how a new generation thinks about health coaching. You are not just checking a box to sit for the board exam. You are learning a proven clinical philosophy, joining a global practitioner community, and graduating with a depth of knowledge that most health coaches never develop. The NBC-HWC credential gets you in the room. What you learn at IHPI sets you apart once you are there.

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN EACH COHORT?

IHP+ cohorts are intentionally kept small - just 30 students per intake. This is a deliberate choice. Real learning happens through discussion, feedback, and direct engagement with the material and your peers. A small cohort means you are never just a name in a portal. You get the attention, accountability, and community experience that a program like this demands.

WHAT IS THE NBHWC?

The National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) is the leading credentialing body for health and wellness coaches in the United States. It sets the educational and professional standards that define what it means to be a qualified, board-certified health coach - and its exam is administered in partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the same organization behind U.S. medical licensing. IHP+ is a fully approved NBHWC training program, which means completing it makes you eligible to sit for the national board exam.

WILL COMPLETING IHP+ MAKE ME A BOARD-CERTIFIED HEALTH COACH?

Not automatically - and that is worth understanding clearly. IHP+ is an NBHWC-approved training program, which is a required prerequisite to sit for the national board exam. Once you complete the program, you will be eligible to apply to take the Health and Wellness Coach Certifying Examination. Passing that exam is what earns you the NBC-HWC designation. Think of IHP+ as the training that prepares you thoroughly - the credential is yours to claim once you sit the exam.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THESE CREDENTIALS?

The combination of your IHP certification and the NBC-HWC designation opens more doors than either does alone. You can build a private health coaching practice, work within functional medicine or integrative health clinics, partner with corporate wellness programs, consult with healthcare providers, or create digital products and group programs around your expertise. The health and wellness coaching market was valued at $20.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach nearly $38 billion by 2034. Coaches who hold a recognized board credential and a root-cause methodology are positioned at the leading edge of that growth.

DO I NEED A HEALTH BACKGROUND TO ENROLL?

No. IHP+ is designed to take you from wherever you are - whether you are a personal trainer, nurse, nutritionist, life coach, or someone who simply wants a career in health coaching - and build you into a competent, confident practitioner. The curriculum meets you at your level and progressively deepens your understanding of the body, behavior change, and coaching practice.

WHAT ARE THE PREREQUISITES?

IHP Level 1 is a prerequisite for IHP+. If you have not yet completed Level 1, that is your starting point - and it is a foundational program in its own right. Level 1 introduces you to Dr. Cabral's root-cause framework and the core principles of integrative health, giving you the grounding you need to get the most out of IHP+.

HOW DOES IHP+ PREPARE ME TO PASS THE NBHWC EXAM?

The curriculum is built to satisfy and exceed NBHWC educational requirements across all core exam domains - including behavior change theory, health and wellness principles, coaching skills, and professional practice. But preparation goes deeper than content coverage. Because IHP+ is built around applied, real-world coaching methodology, you are not just memorizing concepts for an exam. You are developing the kind of thinking the exam is actually designed to test.

CAN I BUILD A COACHING BUSINESS AFTER COMPLETING IHP+?

Absolutely - and you will be better equipped to do it than most coaches entering the market. IHP+ graduates leave with a credential, a methodology, and a community. That combination - board-exam eligibility, root-cause clinical knowledge, and the backing of the IHPI practitioner network - is what allows you to charge premium rates, attract serious clients, and build a practice with a clear point of difference.

WHAT SUPPORT DO I GET AS A STUDENT?

You are not just buying a course. You are joining a community of practitioners trained under the same philosophy. IHP+ students get access to curriculum developed directly by Dr. Cabral, a small-cohort learning environment built for real engagement, and the broader IHPI practitioner network - one of the most recognized integrative and functional health coaching communities in the world.
